About

Who are you and what do you do outside of work?

Hey! I’m Rudi. I love cooking beautiful meals using fresh produce, adventuring in the woods and finding new creative outlets. I live in Seattle, Washington with my wife Melissa.

How would you summarize your career?

My career in education has focused on leading high performing teams to design and facilitating learning experiences that support non-traditional learners or non-traditional learning environments- such as operations spaces. Working in this space has required me to take an alternative approach to learning design as many traditional learning theories do not support the specific and varying needs of non-traditional learners.

Taking an alternative approach to training design is great, but do you know the traditional instructional design methods as well?

Yes, I am well versed in traditional instructional design methodology. I use many of design and project management systems including: ADDIE; AGILE, and SAM. When designing in the traditional way I will go through some variation of the following process:

  • Conduct a needs assessment to determine if a learning solution would solve the problem. If training is needed:

  • Hold a kickoff meeting creating a project plan, learning modality, deliverables, and measurement methods.

  • Design & Develop Content to 10%

  • 10% Content Review

  • Design & Develop Content to 60%

  • 60% Review

  • Design & Develop Content to 90%

  • 90% Review

  • Finalize Content

  • Conduct user testing

  • Launch

  • Measure

  • Iterate

Do you have a philosophy about designing learning experiences?

I strongly feel that learning should be fun and should meet the business need at the same time. Though easily said- this is rarely easy to achieve, this is a constant challenge I give myself. Creating fun, and engaging learning experiences that are right sized for a business and able to deliver on the business requirements takes thinking ‘outside the box’ and not being afraid to tear it all down and start over to make something better.
